In May of 1999 my company sent me to Agoura Hills, California for training. I
went prepared to hike some of the area mountains. La Jolla Canyon is close to
the Pacific Ocean, north of Malibou on the Pacific Coast Highway (US1).

At the start of the trail there is a sign warning of Mountain Lions and Poison Oak. The radio was warning about rattlesnakes. I brought along a snakebite kit just in case. |
| I consider the hike to be an easy-intermediate hike. It starts off winding through the base of the canyon. The growth is low and there is lots of plantlife to look at. It appears that a fire had been through the canyon at some time. There is new signs of life everywhere. |

Ed joined me for this hike. He is a high school buddy that has lived in the LA area for several years. This picture looks back through the canyon that we hiked. |
This photo is taken in the same location facing the opposite direction. Here we
are about one third of the way to the top. The trail crosses the stream in
front of Ed, then go to the right, past me and continues up the hill.

Once we reached the top of the canyon the views were fabulous. The trail wraps through the canyon up to the mountain tops. The trail follows the ridge around to the last peak in the distance which overlooks US1 and the Pacific Ocean. |
Here I am crouched beside a cactus, with the Pacific Ocean in the background. I did the hike twice, The first time I did not allow enough time to make it to the end. I never saw any rattlesnakes or mountain lions. It will be a hike that I never forget! |
